Apparently, not everyone is buying into the hype of the so-called “Big Beautiful Bill” making its way through Congress. One particularly high-profile dissenter? Elon Musk—entrepreneur, tech mogul, former head of the Department of Government Efficiency, and, perhaps most notably, a man who actually understands math.
On Monday, Musk took to X, the social media platform he owns, and delivered a scathing takedown of the Republican-backed spending bill. While President Trump and several members of the GOP have dubbed it a necessary and beautiful fix for a number of national concerns, Musk didn’t hold back from calling it exactly what he believes it is: an unsustainable, pork-loaded catastrophe.
“I’m sorry, but I just can’t stand it anymore,” Musk posted. “This massive, outrageous, pork-filled Congressional spending bill is a disgusting abomination. Shame on those who voted for it: you know you did wrong. You know it.”
That doesn’t exactly sound like the endorsement Trump and company were hoping for from the man they previously trusted to lead the now-defunct Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE). But to Musk’s credit, he isn’t known for mincing words, especially when it comes to poor fiscal management.
In a follow-up post, Musk went deeper into the heart of the issue: the national debt. “It will massively increase the already gigantic budget deficit to $2.5 trillion (!!!) and burden [American] citizens with crushingly unsustainable debt,” he wrote. You can practically hear the calculators breaking.
It’s no secret that Musk has always maintained a strong stance against bloated government spending. But now, with the deficit ballooning and lawmakers throwing buzzwords like “investment” and “infrastructure” at every corner of the bill, his frustration has gone public—and viral.
Musk even reposted Congressman Thomas Massie, a known fiscal hawk from Kentucky who’s found himself at odds with Trump over his opposition to the bill. Musk simply captioned the post with: “Simple math,” highlighting the disconnect between flashy political marketing and basic arithmetic.
And he’s not alone in raising red flags. Senators Rand Paul and Ron Johnson have joined the fiscally conservative chorus warning that the bill is another case of Washington overpromising and overcharging. Their concern is rooted in a painfully familiar pattern: big promises, bigger numbers, and little regard for future generations who’ll have to pay for it.
“Congress is making America bankrupt,” Musk added in another post. Unfortunately, based on how this bill is progressing, it doesn’t seem like many lawmakers are listening.
The House narrowly passed the bill, despite Republican division, and it’s now being reviewed and potentially amended in the Senate. But the window to stop what critics are calling another reckless spending spree is quickly closing.
Former National Security Advisor Gen. Mike Flynn chimed in on X with a cynical—though not entirely unjustified—take: “The hogs are still at the trough and will refuse to move away from it. There are not enough honest people in Congress who are willing to stand up for the harder right thing even at this stage of our monumental national debt.”
That comment, echoing the frustration of millions of Americans, underscores the growing divide between fiscal conservatives who want to rein in spending and establishment Republicans who seem determined to spend like Democrats—just with different priorities.
Whether or not the bill makes it through the Senate, one thing is crystal clear: Musk has no intention of letting Congress off the hook for its spending habits. He may have stepped down from his official government post, but his influence—and his megaphone—are still very much active.
If there’s one silver lining here, it’s this: people are paying attention. With over 18 million views and counting, Musk’s rebuke has become more than a viral post. It’s a rallying cry for those still fighting for fiscal sanity in a city that seems addicted to doing the opposite.
