The Washington Post reported that Secret Service officials repeatedly turned down requests for additional resources from former President Donald Trump’s detail before the assassination attempt on July 13.

During the rally in Butler County, Pennsylvania, a gunman fired multiple shots, slightly injuring Trump in the right ear and killing former volunteer fire chief Corey Comperatore while also wounding two others.

The Post also stated that Trump’s security detail had been denied resources for at least two years leading up to the incident, including a request for counter-sniper teams during a 2023 appearance in Pickens, South Carolina, where several buildings surrounded Trump’s stage.

“It’s just true — we don’t have the resources to secure him [Trump] like we did when he was president,” one official told the Washington Post, which reported that events involving President Joe Biden and First Lady Jill Biden were competing for resources last week. Agents were also involved in advance work for the Republican National Convention, according to the Post.

A former Secret Service agent attributed the resource shortage to top leaders.

“I hate to dumb it down this much but it is a simple case of supply and demand. The requests get turned down routinely,” retired Secret Service agent Bill Gage told the Post. “A director has to finally come forward to say we are way understaffed and we cannot possibly continue with this zero fail mission without a significantly bigger budget.”

Republican Rep. Jim Jordan of Ohio, who serves as the House Judiciary Committee chairman, penned a letter to FBI Director Christopher Wray on Thursday.

In the letter, he stated that whistleblowers have informed his committee that President Trump’s security detail was understaffed due to the NATO summit in Washington, D.C. and Jill Biden’s campaign event in Pittsburgh.

Wray is scheduled to appear before the House Judiciary Committee on Wednesday.

Following an assassination attempt on July 13, independent presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr. was granted Secret Service protection after it had initially been denied.

Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle has come under pressure to resign and is expected to testify at a House Oversight Committee hearing that is investigating security breaches at the July 13 rally on Monday.

In 2016, during his presidential campaign, Trump survived an assassination attempt at a campaign event in Las Vegas when a 20-year-old man attempted to grab a police officer’s gun with the intention of shooting the then-presumptive GOP nominee.
