Gustavo Gordillo, a co-chair of the New York City chapter of the Democratic Socialists of America, has become a familiar face in cable news and online political debate. But a new report is putting his personal background under the microscope.
According to the New York Post, Gordillo lives in a Brooklyn townhouse now valued at about $1.5 million that was purchased by his parents. The outlet reported that the roughly 2,000-square-foot home was bought and renovated through a trust fund in 2019 for about $1 million.
Family Wealth Meets Socialist Politics
The Post reported that Gordillo’s father owns Draftpros Inc., a company described by the outlet as specializing in engineering and consulting services.
The disclosure has drawn attention because Gordillo is publicly associated with socialist politics through his leadership role in the NYC-DSA and his appearances in media and on social platforms.
Yale Background and Union Claim Questioned
The report also noted that Gordillo studied fine arts at Yale University. The school’s estimated annual cost of attendance is now roughly $94,000, according to the source article.
After Yale, Gordillo enrolled in an apprenticeship program to become an electrician. However, IBEW Local 3 told the Post that Gordillo was fired from the program in March 2026 over unexcused absences and failure to attend classes.
Despite that dismissal, the Post reported that Gordillo has continued to describe himself online as a “union electrician.”
Why the Story Matters
The report does not disprove Gordillo’s political views or his right to advocate for socialism. But it does raise an obvious question for voters and viewers: how much personal background should matter when a political activist presents himself as a voice for working-class politics?
