San Francisco’s wastewater has been found to contain the mpox virus, which has been classified as a “public health emergency of international concern” by the World Health Organization (WHO).

As per the WastewaterSCAN Dashboard, a monitoring tool for infectious diseases in local areas, mpox (previously called monkeypox) was detected in southeast San Francisco on July 26, August 11, and August 12.

It is worth mentioning that the origin of these detections is uncertain, and it has not been confirmed whether the virus originated from human sources.
The database in San Francisco, known as “Mpox data and reports,” has not published any data for August.
However, it does document a single case of mpox in July.
In May, the San Francisco Health Department urged residents to prioritize their sexual health as summer approached and recommended complete vaccination against mpox.
